Scottish Colourists
The Scottish Colourists were four Scottish artists: Samuel John Peploe, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, George Leslie Hunter and John Duncan Fergusson. They spent time in France and were influenced by the Impressionist movement.
Generally I like a more vibrant pallette. However the painting below suited the Covid mood. Painted in the early 2020’s, I replaced the Edwardian mother and daughter with Jack Vettriano’s dancers to give colour and poignancy…

Although the Scottish Landscapes tend to a little mono-tonal (that’s what it is like!), I was attracted to Fergusson’s paintings of women wearing the costumes of the era. Also when they ventured to France they showed they could take full advantage of the light.
